Let’s talk about the “best” shower filters
If you’ve ever Googled “top shower filters Australia” or found yourself scrolling through articles, you’ve probably seen the usual suspects: vitamin C ones, the cheap plasticy looking ones (apparently 15 stages??), and maybe a luxury brand or two that looks like it belongs in a spa in Byron.
But here’s the thing: not all filters are created equal...
I tried a bunch of the most popular ones, some worked okay, some were all packaging, and some did nothing at all. I'm not trying to call anyone out. I just want to explain what I learned, what actually matters, and why we decided to build something better.
The “spa” filters with vitamin C beads
They’re pretty, they smell nice, and they market hard to people with skin sensitivity. But in reality…
- Vitamin C degrades quickly when exposed to air and heat
- Most of these don’t filter out chlorine byproducts, heavy metals, or sediment
- Often made with low-quality plastics and no certified filtration media
The 15-stage filters from big marketplaces
You’ve seen these: long product names, “best value,” lots of metal bits inside. But:
- Many are just layers of sand, stone, and ceramic balls (which don’t filter much)
- No certifications, no third-party testing
- Often NPT thread (doesn't fit Australian fittings - BSP)
- Short lifespan or misleading claims
Luxury filters that look incredible
These often nail the design or have premium branding. But:
- Some focus more on softening than on chemical filtration
- Replacement filters can be very pricey
- Not all are tailored to Australian water conditions (chlorine-heavy)
What I was looking for (but couldn’t find)
All I wanted was just:
- Something that actually removed chlorine (lab-tested)
- Easy to install without tools or plumbers
- Modern, simple design
- Made for Australian homes, not adapted from the US or Europe
Why we created Watego
Watego started with a simple mission: make the kind of shower filter we wish we could buy. One that puts skin health first. Backed by real filtration science, not marketing fluff.
One that looks good in a bathroom, doesn’t require a plumber, and actually does what it says it does.
One that isn’t pretending to be “luxury” while being made from cheap plastic.
Just something honest.
Here's my advice
If you’re shopping around..
Don’t fall for buzzwords. Look for proof.
Ask what media the filter uses.
Check if it fits Australian plumbing (BSP).
Don’t be afraid to ask the brand hard questions (we welcome it)
Clean, safe water shouldn’t be a luxury.
